The Day of Cows...
a poem by Rahel Leingang
This poem was definitely inspired by the many, many cows that I saw on the drive from Colorado Springs to Libby, MT, in December. Those crazy cows did all sorts of things as we passed, and it was rather entertaining. In the first two stanzas are cows that I truly did see, doing things precisely as I have recorded in this poem.... ( I did NOT take any of these photo's... wish i did!) Oh and please read the P.S.!!
Beside the road
as I pulled my load,
of cabbages, one day,
Saw I, a crop,
Where the fences had dropped,
And the cows roamed about it the hay.
They listlessly strolled
And arrogantly rolled
Their sticky tongues through the grass.
And with contented noses
They smiled, I supposes
As if they knew,
full well
of their trespass.
Now farther along I hastily go,
And chance another field behold,
Whose fence is well intact.
But as I venture near,
I see a bossy steer,
Who corners his cows near the hay stacks.
Closer to town,
I tug my cart
Wheels squeaking all the way.
But before I arrive
I see cowmen on the drive,
toward the butcher-house with their herd, today.
"Now, how odd," me thinks,
"All these cows that I've seen.
Some straying,
Others preying,
And some that are gathered for beef that is lean."
I pull my load,
Of cabbages grown,
In my garden, home-sweet-home,
Towards the square,
Where there shall be a fair,
For jellies to sell and livestock shown.
Hats and curls and ribbons and scarves,
And horses tall,
And automobile cars
And shouts, I hear, and good smelling smells
Things, at the fair, which always dwell.
But one thing more that I behold
as the very last cabbages I have sold,
Here come some MORE cows,
wearing ribbons of red and blue and purple and gold...
So fancy, were they,
In coats of brown and black.
Earrings or broaches, they might have displayed,
Or perfume of cost, or belts of brass.
Now along the road,
Do I slowly go,
With a much less heavy load to tow.
And I pass a man,
Returning to his land
Driving humble oxen with their large wagon load.
One might name this day "The Day of Cows"
Or write it down to later arouse.
Perhaps I'll make it a little poem,
And picture frame it in my home,
That I may always remember it as I go...
...Remember The Day Of Cows..."
And let us not forget Jerusalem!
