Dan's Giant Leap (Edited)

Dedication
To Rainbow Falls Sukkot Campers 2011

Today's English assignment was to compose a poem, depicting an event, in order to practice precision in word choice. This was a challenge as a student new to poetry;however, a fellow camper, Dan became inspiration. His chutzpah and intrepid movement was fortuitously captured on film erev Sukkot.

Dan's Giant Leap

Like a savage man, stood he,
On the cleft of a rock.
High atop the shelf of a canyon,
In a green colored smock.

He laughed and he roared,
As a cougar in pride.
And we knew that in moments,
He would leap off the side.

Some of us taunted that he had not the grit,
Others believed that his madness was legit.
Still others, feeling too queasy to stare, turned their heads,
And moved away from there.

Beating, as if with no rest,
Dan's heart wasted no time.
How did he get into this disastrous mess?
He wondered if fame was worth it to die.

But a voice from within,
Like the river below,
Was the captain who charged his
Untamed blood to flow.

And at this very moment
a camera did I grab
"He will not perish," thought I to myself.
"Though I think he is mad!"

As I focused the lens,
all drew in a sharp breath.
Click! went the shutter,
as he jumped to an uncertain death.

Thud!Did he land,
On a cushion of moss,
The very same shade as his
Green colored smock.

"Is he dead?" ask our comrades,
the ones who chose not to watch.
"Of course not!" I answered.
"Check out this great snapshot!"

And so, my dear friends,
I can happily say,
That though Dan never stopped in his quest for adventure,
he is alive, to this day.

However, I warn you,
please heed my words,
for jumping off of very high rocks, wearing green colored smocks, with your comrades in shock
is extremely absurd!
